James Gillespie

James Gillespie (BMus, ARCO, LRAM, ARCM) was a leading figure in Thanet music for over 50 years, and remained active until shortly before his death in February 2015.

His contributions included being accompanist, director then vice-president of Thanet Festival Choir (qv TFC website), chairman and instrumental convenor of Thanet Music and Drama Festival (qv TMDF website), musical director of Ramsgate Operatic Society (qv ROS website) and conductor of Sandwich & District Choral Society (qv SDCS website), as well as prolific organist, pianist, accompanist, teacher and choral director.

He had a huge breadth of knowledge - in particular, what he didn't know about Gilbert & Sullivan wasn't worth knowing. He was also very dedicated to each of the groups he supported: even in his later years he would cycle across Thanet to distribute programmes for TMDF, rather than incurring postage costs.
