Winter Gardens Orchestra

The Winter Gardens orchestra

After the Second World War, Margate Municipal Orchestra changed its name to the Winter Gardens orchestra.

Its conductor (and host for the 1950s Sunday Socials) was Leslie Wheeler. His 9-piece band (12-piece for the summer show) featured Margaret Moon singing and several local musicians - apparently "the trumpet player worked in Dyes the furniture shop in Margate High Street and the clarinet player was an optician from Northdown Road". The band grew for a while to 11 musicians but then shrank to just four in around 1960, before fading away when the Rendezvous Club arrived.
